Is Amazon Prime Worth It for Holiday Gift Shopping?
If most of your holiday gift list ends up in an Amazon cart anyway, it's worth asking whether a Prime membership makes that shopping easier. We don't think Prime is right for everybody. But a few of its benefits fit the way people actually shop for gifts in November and December. Below, we cover the perks that matter most for holiday shopping, plus a few questions to ask yourself before you sign up.
Every benefit below comes from Amazon's own pages. Amazon changes Prime from time to time, so check the official Amazon Prime page for current details and eligibility before you join.
Fast, free delivery is the big one for gift givers
The holiday season runs on deadlines. There's the family gathering, the office exchange, and the stocking you forgot until the night before. Delivery speed is the benefit most likely to save you here.
Amazon says that in the U.S., more than 300 million items ship free with Prime. It also says tens of millions of the most popular items can arrive with free Same-Day or One-Day Delivery. For a gift shopper, that changes how you plan. You can shop in smaller batches as ideas come to you, rather than placing one big order weeks early and hoping nothing is missing.
In select cities and towns, Amazon also offers even faster delivery windows on a wide range of everyday items. These include 1-hour and 3-hour options, plus very fast delivery on essentials through Amazon Now. Availability depends on where you live. Treat these as a bonus, not something to count on for Christmas Eve.
Gift tip: Fast shipping helps most with last-minute gifts. Pair it with our last-minute stocking stuffer strategy and you can fill stockings in an evening.
Member-only deals and deal events
Big sale events matter during gift season, and Prime members get some extra access:
- Prime-exclusive deal events. Amazon says you need a Prime membership to get the savings during events such as Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days.
- Everyday Prime-exclusive deals. Amazon says thousands of deals across the store are open only to Prime members.
- Early access to Lightning Deals. Prime members can see Lightning Deals 30 minutes before everyone else. That matters when a popular gift tends to sell out.
A deal only counts as savings if it's something you already planned to buy. Make your list first, then watch for deals on what's on it. Our Black Friday deals worth watching guide and our article on how to shop Black Friday smartly explain how to do that without impulse buying.
Entertainment for the holidays (and gift ideas)
Prime isn't only about shopping. Several of the included benefits are handy during the holidays at home:
- Prime Video. Movies, series and live sports, including Amazon MGM Studios originals. That covers a lot of holiday movie nights.
- Amazon Music. Amazon says Prime members get access to over 100 million songs in shuffle mode, All-Access Playlists, and a large catalog of ad-free podcasts. That's enough for a holiday party playlist.
- Reading perks. Prime includes a rotating selection of eBooks, audiobooks, comics and manga at no extra cost. Amazon First Reads also lets members pick one free Kindle book each month before it publishes.
- Gaming. Prime includes access to Amazon Luna, a cloud gaming library that includes a collection of family-friendly party games.
If someone on your list loves books, these perks can also help you find gift ideas. Browse our gifts for book lovers for physical gifts that go well with a reading habit.
Holiday photo storage
The holidays mean a lot of photos. With Amazon Photos, Prime members get unlimited full-resolution photo storage plus some video storage. You can share albums with family and show pictures on compatible devices such as Fire TV and Echo Show. It's an easy way to get everyone's holiday photos in one place after the gathering.
Shopping for kids and families
Families with kids can get more use out of a membership. Amazon Family lets members share a range of benefits with another adult in the household. It also lets them share Prime Video and some digital content with up to four children. If you're buying lots of kids' gifts, our toys and gifts for kids guide is a good place to start your list. Fast delivery helps when a must-have toy turns up late in the season.
Other perks you may not know about
Some Prime benefits have nothing to do with gifts but add to the overall value:
- Grubhub+ included. Amazon says every Prime membership comes with Grubhub+, which includes perks such as no delivery fees on eligible orders. That helps on busy December nights when nobody wants to cook.
- Fuel savings. Prime members can save on fuel at participating bp, Amoco, ampm and Thorntons stations in the U.S. That's useful if you're driving to see family.
- Grocery convenience. Prime members get grocery perks through Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market, including faster delivery options in eligible areas. That makes stocking up for holiday meals easier.
The honest downsides
Prime is a recurring charge, and it renews automatically unless you cancel. Free shipping can also nudge you toward small extra orders you wouldn't otherwise make. Not every item ships fast to every address, and the ultra-fast options only exist in some areas. If you shop on Amazon only a few times a year, the math may not work out.
So, is Prime worth it for holiday shopping?
Ask yourself three questions:
1. How many gifts will you buy on Amazon this season? If most of your list comes from Amazon, free fast delivery and member deals will make a real difference. 2. Do you shop late? If you usually buy gifts in the last two weeks before the holidays, faster shipping is a real safety net. 3. Will you use the extras? Video, music, reading and photo storage make the membership worth more for the rest of the year. If you won't use them, the case for Prime rests almost entirely on shipping and deals.
If you answered yes to two or more, Prime is probably a good fit for the holiday season. Check Amazon's Prime membership page for current plans, options and eligibility, including discounted memberships for qualifying students, young adults and government-assistance recipients. Then decide whether it suits how you shop. Whatever you choose, start with a list and a budget for each person. That habit will save you more than any single perk.
